Breast augmentation recovery happens in stages. Most patients feel noticeably better within the first few days, but swelling, tightness, and the final position of the implants continue to change for months. Knowing what to expect at each stage makes recovery easier to plan and less stressful to go through.
This guide walks through the recovery process as it typically unfolds at Wright Surgical Arts. Your own timeline will depend on your surgical plan, your health, your job, and how your body heals, and your written instructions always take priority over a general guide.

Before surgery
A little planning makes the first few days much easier. Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you the first night. Fill your prescriptions ahead of time, prepare simple meals, put everyday items at waist height so you don't have to reach, and set up a comfortable place to rest with pillows to support you on your back.
Buy one or two supportive sports bras before surgery. You'll wear one day and night for the first month. The brand and style are up to you; what matters is solid, even support without underwire.
We strongly encourage you to stop all nicotine at least one month before surgery. That includes cigarettes, vaping, chewing tobacco, and nicotine gum or patches. Nicotine narrows blood vessels and slows healing. We'll also review your medications and supplements with you, so don't stop or change a prescription on your own.
Traveling from out of town
If you're coming from outside the Tri-Cities, we provide a complimentary hotel stay the night before surgery so you can arrive rested and close by. Most out-of-town patients can travel home after their procedure, as long as someone else is driving.
Surgery day and the first 48 hours
At Wright Surgical Arts, breast augmentation is performed under deep IV sedation rather than general anesthesia. Most patients wake up quickly and feel less groggy than they expect. Implants are usually placed beneath the chest muscle through a small incision in the breast crease, where the scar sits naturally in the fold.
Expect tightness, pressure, and soreness across the chest, especially with muscle movement. This is normal with implants placed under the muscle. You'll go home with prescription pain medication and instructions for taking it.
Take short walks around the house to support circulation, and rest the remainder of the time.
Chest soreness is usually at its worst in the first two days. Some patients with desk-based jobs feel ready to return to work as early as 48 hours, and most are back by day three to five. Let how you feel be your guide. Jobs that involve lifting, reaching overhead, or physical labor usually need two to four weeks or modified duties.
Week 1
Swelling and tenderness are still present, and your upper-body movement will feel limited. One breast may look or feel different from the other, and temporary changes in nipple or breast sensation are common. These early differences usually even out as swelling resolves.
- Wear your sports bra day and night.
- Walk several times a day.
- Sleep on your back, and skip underwire bras.
- Lift nothing heavier than 10 pounds.
- Drive only after you've stopped prescription pain medication and can turn the wheel hard and brake suddenly without hesitating. For most patients, that's around one week.
For moms
If you have young children, recovery gets real fast. As Dr. Wright tells his patients: You're a mom, and moms have to do mom things. You just need to be careful when you do them.
That means sitting down and letting your little one climb into your lap instead of lifting them, kneeling for hugs, and having someone else handle the car seat and bath time for the first couple of weeks. Plan that help before surgery, and you'll protect your results without putting your life on hold.
Your first follow-up visit is at one week. We'll check your incisions and implant position and show you how to start breast massage, which helps the implants settle into a soft, natural position.
Weeks 2 through 4
Discomfort and bruising continue to fade, and most patients are back to their normal daily routine. Keep sleeping on your back and wearing your sports bra day and night, and continue your massage as instructed.
At two weeks, you can lift up to 20 pounds and begin lower-body exercise and stationary cardio, such as walking on a treadmill or riding a stationary bike. Hold off on anything that works or bounces the chest.
Implants often sit high on the chest and feel firm at first. This is expected, especially with implants placed under the muscle. As the muscle relaxes and swelling goes down, the implants gradually drop into a softer, more natural position. The two sides don't always settle at the same pace, so try not to judge your result yet.
Around weeks three to four, once your incisions are fully closed, you can begin silicone scar strips or silicone gel. Used consistently over the following months, silicone helps scars flatten and fade. This is also when most patients can swim or take a bath again.
One month
At your one-month visit, we'll review your healing. Most patients are cleared to sleep on their side, move out of the sports bra during the day, and begin running and higher-impact cardio in a supportive sports bra. Lifting limits ease gradually from here.
Hold off on chest and upper-body weight training until six weeks. That's also when underwire bras can return. Your incision sits in the breast crease, right where an underwire rests, so it needs the extra time to strengthen.
Six weeks
Most patients are cleared to return to chest and upper-body workouts and to wear underwire bras. Start with lighter weights and build up gradually. Any pain during an activity means it's too soon. Stomach sleeping usually becomes comfortable between six and eight weeks. Continue wearing a supportive sports bra whenever you exercise.
Three to six months
Swelling continues to resolve and the implants keep settling. Most patients see a result close to final by three months, with subtle refinements through six months. Scars are often pink or slightly raised at first, then gradually soften and lighten. They fade considerably but never disappear completely.
Your three-month and six-month visits let us confirm that everything has healed and settled as expected. Keep these appointments even if you feel great.
What can affect your recovery?
No two recoveries are identical. Factors that influence how quickly you heal include:
- Implant placement, above or below the muscle
- Whether a breast lift or another procedure is done at the same time
- The physical demands of your job, workouts, and caregiving
- Nicotine use
- Your overall health and medications
- How closely you follow your postoperative instructions

Frequently asked questions
How long do I need to wear a sports bra after breast augmentation?
Wear a supportive sports bra day and night for the first month. Any brand works as long as it gives firm, even support.
When can I go back to work?
Some patients with desk jobs return as early as 48 hours, and most are back by day three to five. Physically demanding jobs usually need two to four weeks.
When can I drive?
Once you've stopped prescription pain medication and can turn the wheel and brake suddenly without hesitating, usually around one week.
When can I sleep on my side or wear an underwire bra?
Most patients can sleep on their side at four weeks. Underwire bras wait until six weeks, because the wire rests directly on the incision in the breast crease.
When can I exercise after breast augmentation?
Walking starts right away. Lower-body exercise and stationary cardio can begin at two weeks, running at four weeks, and chest and upper-body workouts at six weeks.
Will I be put to sleep?
We perform breast augmentation under deep IV sedation rather than general anesthesia.
Where will my scars be?
In most cases, the incision is placed in the crease beneath the breast, where the scar is well hidden.
When will I see my final result?
Most patients see a result close to final by three months, with continued settling through six months.
